I get a monthly newsletter from one of my personal training certifications and the most recent one had an article titled, “Why your clients are not getting the results they want.” It instantly caught my attention because honestly, sometimes clients we work with don’t get the results we want them to get. That’s real talk.
I can promise you that no one (aside from yourself) wants you to get the results you want more than your trainer. We program for results. We harass for results. We support for results. We try to create an environment for results. We want you to win. It’s why we do what we do and we don’t give up! But sometimes we don’t see the results we want.
The article had four reasons why results don’t happen, and all were good, but there was one that really stood out to me that I wanted to talk about today. ‘Consistency and Time’ Having gone through my own transformation 12 years ago, this one really hit home for me. It took me two years to really get the weight off and more like three to keep it off. *gulp* That can be a hard pill to swallow folks. It wasn’t a four week transformation or a 90 day sprint, it was a good little chunk of time.
Here is a small clip from the article that really nails it. “To get to where you are now took some serious time. Has it been a rough year? Five years? Or maybe even 20 years? However long it’s been for you, your total weight and body composition are a direct result of thousands of different factors that have adapted over your total lifespan.
For instance, if you spent the last 10 years of your life eating sugary desserts a few times a week, getting poor sleep, propping up the bar at happy hour instead of exercising, and getting stressed out at work, your health, your weight, and your energy levels reflect those actions.
Now imagine your client in that position. She wants to change and she works hard, but after a couple weeks, she expects results that aren’t there. She wants a few weeks of effort to undo years of bad habits. Your client needs to come to the realization that undoing years of these lifestyle habits takes time. She also needs the motivation and encouragement from you to keep going and to stay on this long journey.
In my experience as a trainer, I expect a true, lasting weight loss transformation to take about one-quarter of the time that it took to gain the weight in the first place. In other words, if your client spent the last eight years in an unhealthy spiral of weight gain and crash dieting, then she can expect it to take at least two years to get back to a healthy weight.”
I can sugar coat that all you want but it’s the tough reality of a true, lasting transformation. Here is the good news through, EVERYONE and I mean everyone can achieve the results they want. I have been doing this for 11 years and have worked with hundreds of people and am confident in saying that every person, if they put the time, effort and energy in, can reach their goals. It may take some longer than others but it is very possible.
